Craighead Diocesan School

Established in 1911, Craighead is a Christian day and boarding school for girls from Year 7 to 13 (ages 11 to 18) in Timaru, New Zealand. Student numbers are restricted to 300 and we accept up to 20 International Students.

Students work for excellence in all areas, spiritual, academic, physical and cultural. Craighead has a history of high academic success and traditional standards of discipline.

Craighead's Boarding House is set in the school grounds with just over three and a half hectares of majestic trees, wide lawns, and gardens. Our Boarding House is modern and very comfortable with dormitory style rooms of eight or four beds for the juniors and single, two or four bed rooms for the seniors.

We give your daughter a home away from home in a friendly, caring atmosphere.

Each year level has its own House Supervisor. Juniors are accommodated in Shand House with additional support from GAP students. Seniors are accommodated in the Len Home wing.

Year 13 girls are given more independence combined with leadership responsibilities in the House. They also bring a 'big sister' role to the Boarding House, looking after new junior Boarders and ensuring that they settle well into their new environment.

Craighead Diocesan School was established in 1911 by the daughters of Professor Shand of Otago University and was privately run until 1926.

In 1926, Craighead became affiliated to the Anglican Church and daily worship in the Chapel is an important part of Craighead life since that time. Miss Salmond, a previous Headmistress, introduced the House system in 1927. The School still has the same Maori names for its Houses, which come from the four points of a compass.

Craighead offers modern and comfortable boarding facilities for 115 girls situated in the School grounds. Extensive redevelopment has been carried out in recent years so that the buildings are now as attractive as the large, well maintained grounds.

Recent developments and building programmes have provided a Technology Room and two Computer Suites. A major upgrade of the Science Laboratories, the development of a new Music Suite and extensive alterations in Oakeley House for the Art Department have ensure that Craighead continues to provide facilities that support effective curriculum delivery. There are common rooms for each Year level from Year 9 - Year 13.

The School now has a computer network and intranet system for student access. Girls may research information on the Web with their own individual login name and password. Boarders have access to the network after School.
