Maine Central Institute
Maine Central Institute's hallmark is its safe, caring and supportive atmosphere. With our multicultural population, we are especially aware that we must take care of each other. Respect, appreciation and concern for one another are fostered in countless ways.
MCI and the town of Pittsfield emulate what life in Maine should be. The state has a long history and tradition of welcoming friends and visitors. Our school and community have worked together to maintain that caring attitude. Many local families have opened their homes to our boarding students through our Host Family Program. Our students feel safe and accepted by this community of about 4,500 people. Day students and residential students have found a unique way of coming together; this is the attitude our state is known for - welcoming, accepting and friendly.
The same tradition of safety and support exists within the MCI family. Every Wednesday, we come together as a school family at our Morning Meeting. This involves every person on campus, including students, faculty, staff, administrators, maintenance, kitchen personnel and visitors. Students and student groups present short programs on a country's culture, a project they're involved in, or an issue they need to discuss. We share information, tackle problems, show concern for people in need of support, thank people for jobs well done and celebrate academic and athletic successes among our family members.
As we move through our school day, caring and concern are present in the small classes, where individual attention is given to each student. They can be found in the extra one-on-one faculty help always available to students, in the supervised study halls for residential students and in the bi-weekly monitoring of grades sent home to parents.
Coupled with this academic care is a strong network positioned to support the total student. Residential parents and advisors, the Personal Counseling Office, Wellness Programs, crisis and substance abuse intervention, a Student Assistance Team, a Civil Rights Team and a strong harassment policy work together to keep all of our students safe and well.
Our academic rigor is enhanced by the cultural diversity of our residential community, the extensive extra-curricular programs, and a safe and nurturing family atmosphere set in beautiful central Maine. MCI provides the best of all worlds - the benefits of a small boarding school and its wonderfully rich mix of cultures, backgrounds and races with a day student population that enables the larger school community to enjoy a broad range of athletics, club activities and community service opportunities. The individual needs of our students are carefully met and their unique gifts and special abilities are celebrated. The relationships between faculty and staff and our students are close, meaningful and supportive.
Maine Central Institute has extensive and unique programs available as well. Our Bossov Ballet Theatre is world-famous and our post-graduate basketball program is internationally recognized. MCI boasts its own student-operated television station, and our English as a Second Language (ESL) is academically proven to enrich and enhance student learning. Every twelfth grade student must complete an arduous Senior Project prior to graduation. MCI’s many musicians competed at the large and prestigious Williamsburg, Virginia 2004 Music Festival and won every single category! Our Vocal Jazz Ensemble wins state champion honors more often than not.
Students choose to come to Maine Central Institute from all over Maine, the country and the world…for many good reasons. I invite you to visit our beautiful and traditional red-brick campus to learn more about the exceptional opportunities available to you at MCI.
